French Limestone Madonna and Child 13th/14th CenturyA wonderfully evocative early carving of the Madonna and Child in limestone. France c. 13th 14th Century. The Madonna wears a long cape over a belted tunic, the swathes of deeply carved fabric swaddle connecting her to the child. To the flat back of the piece you can see an amount of original polychrome in red and in places blue. The red garment signifies traits connected with motherhood love, passion and devotion; blue represents the Virgins purity.
